The Power Of Visualization Meditation
I’m a huge believer in the effect that ambience has on us. The environments we choose to place ourselves in, has such a powerful effect on our own perspective of what’s out in the world, what is possible.
I’ve traveled several times over the past few months, from Scottsdale to New York City, from Switzerland to Mexico. It never matters where I go, the effect is the same, there is always a limiting belief to be destroyed, a fresh perspective to consider.
Not many people know the story but author J.K. Rowling, famous for writing Harry Potter, escaped to The Balmoral Hotel in the capital of Scotland, where she wrote in room 552 for 6 months to complete the final book of the Harry Potter series.
She harnessed the power of a fresh environment, a fresh perspective, and in a world of distractions, going back to the laws of nature, and harnessing those over the laws of man, we too, can create monumental change.
Something I’ve thought about a lot recently is breaking the pattern, stopping those bad habits and behaviors that prevent us from unlocking the next version of ourselves.
But how do we actually do that, how do we break the pattern?
That’s where visualization meditation comes in. It’s the practice of focusing on our future selves, imaging ourselves in a future environment, and picturing all the details.
When we do this, we can work backwards, reverse engineer our vision to figure out exactly what we need to add to our life, but more importantly, know what needs to stop, what needs to be cut out.
With that said, here are the 4 actionable ways to leverage visualization meditation.
1. Have clarity on where you are looking to go
To visualize your future self, start with having clarity of what you want your future self to look like. What do you want to be doing with your time, how do you want to move, think, and act, because creating this mental picture allows for the opportunity for us to really visualize the environment we will be in.
2. Creating the peaceful and calm environment to think
It’s hard to do deep thinking when you are surrounded by noise and distractions, so it’s incredibly important to really allow yourself to be in a calm, quiet, and clean environment that really allows you to bring the best out of your thinking.
3. Starting with an object
Funny enough, starting with something as simple as an object, like a watch, where you start to visualize every little detail about it can be extremely helpful for you to start to visualize something that hasn’t happened yet.
4. Picture your future self giving you advice
Weird idea, but imagine your wiser, more put together self, sitting down with you, and giving you advice about what to do, what not to do. With your best long term interest at heart, what would they advise you to do, and equally as important, what would they advise you not to do. This is a great frame to advance your thinking, and approach things from a different perspective.
